Carers Week 2026

This Carers Week 2026, we shine a spotlight on one of our amazing carers and the impact she has on so many families of children with congenital heart defects and complex health needs.

Claire Donnelly has worked as a carer with Lagan’s Foundation since March 2019. She joined part-time and is now a full-time Advanced Senior Carer who supports the care team in their day-to-day running of care services.

For families caring for a child with congenital heart disease or complex feeding difficulties, life can be relentless. The respite offered by Claire and the team of carers at Lagan’s Foundation is often the only help available.

Claire loves making a difference in family’s lives. “No matter how small or big, seeing the smile on a non-verbal child melts your heart.

“Being a children’s carer can be the most challenging yet rewarding role.”

As an advanced senior carer, Claire oversees the packages and supports the care team with training requirements. She also ensures that they carry out their tasks with confidence and competence. She also liaises with local authority and NHS multi-disciplinary teams and commissioners regarding the children and their care.

Claire added: “Knowing I’ve made a difference to the children’s day makes me proud, if I have got them out of the house to activities and engaged them in fun.

“It allows parents to have the break they need to be able to carry out their parenting tasks for when we are not there.”

After a long shift, she enjoys relaxing by watching crime shows or hospital documentaries as well as spending time with her own family.

Her advice to anyone considering a role in the care sector is that “passion” is important.

“If you have the passion to support children, a fun-loving nature and want to make a difference, you will fit right in.”
