What is respite care?

If you care for a loved one, respite care provides you with a much needed break and additional support. Here at Lagan’s we specialise in providing respite care and short breaks for children with complex health needs.

Respite care, also referred to as short breaks, allows you to take a well-earned break from caring for a loved one. We understand caring for a child that has complex care needs can be challenging, and it’s important to seek help and take some time off. This might be to have a much needed rest, have a shower, spend quality time with other members of the family or to do tasks you perhaps struggle to find the time to do.

Benefits and importance of respite care

Whilst as a parent/guardian you naturally want to do your very best for your child, caring for their specific health needs can be stressful and very draining. Respite care can be a lifeline for family members to restore energy levels and enjoy other tasks that are important in promoting a healthy lifestyle. It can also ensure parents spend quality time with other children.

Respite care can also bring many benefits for the child too, a different friendly face can boost the child’s mental health and provide a change to an everyday routine. This companion relationship can be greatly welcomed by the child.

How do I get respite care for my child?

There’s typically two ways of getting respite care with ourselves, the first comes from professional referrals from local councils, GP’s, health visitors or social workers.

Alternatively you can refer yourself or ask a family or friends to get in touch with us.

  1. Children with social care or continuing care packages within Merseyside, Greater Manchester or Cheshire aged 0-19.

  2. * Children who are not entitled to statutory social care or continuing care packages aged 0-19 within Lancashire, Greater Manchester or Merseyside who have either a heart defect or feeding difficulty.

* Please note we will need to understand how much care is being asked for and how often the care is wanted. The charity will consider cases for six months of intervention and the trustees will consider each case individually. This care will be delivered by our qualified care staff as a funded service via Lagan’s Foundation. This service is funded purely on donations of the public and is subject to available funds
