What is a family support worker?

A family support worker is a more defined explanation of a support worker role. A support worker is extremely broad, providing a multitude of tasks for a person whatever their needs.

In our line of work, a family support worker, also called children’s complex health care worker, is required to provide specific practical help to support a child with unique health needs or a disability, alongside support for the parent/s through respite and advice.

What does a family support worker do?

Tasks carried out by a family support worker are varied, and are dependent on the child and families needs. Caring for disabled children can be challenging so to achieve a high level of care patience, flexibility and professionalism is required.

Some of the activities you would be expected to support with include:

  • Personal Care
  • Support accessing the community
  • Overnight supervision and care
  • Managing risk
  • Supporting parents to take a break
  • Monitoring the overall health and well-being of the child
  • Play

How to become a family support worker

Our family support worker jobs can be full time or part time and working hours can vary with shifts ranging from early mornings, evening, overnight and weekends.

 

Previous experience as a care assistant with disabled children is essential.

As part of our online application form, we will ask you for:

  • The details of 2 referees
  • A vaccination record from your GP to be returned within 21 days
  • A head shot photo to be returned via email or the post within 7 days
  • We will send you a Criminal Records Disclosure  (DBS) which must be returned in 7 days

Family Support Worker Training

Following successful application we will invite you to our specific training at a centre of excellence in the UK.  You will be requested to attend 5 days induction at our head office.
