Lagan’s Foundation FAQs
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a scheme by the UK government that enables charities to increase the value of donations made by reclaiming the basic tax rate that has been paid on the gift.
At the moment, we can claim 25p for every £1 that you donate. This means if you donated £100 to our charity, we would receive an extra £25 at no additional cost to yourself, which we will use to help the lives of families and children affected by complex living needs.
What are the Gift Aid rules?
There are a few rules you’ll want to keep in mind when you’re thinking of signing a charity up for Gift Aid:
- We can only claim donations if the donor has filled out the Gift Aid declaration for.
- We can only claim donations if the donor has paid a sufficient amount of Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax that year.
- Donations won’t qualify for Gift Aid if they are worth four times the amount that the donor has paid in tax that year.
- We must have a system or database of all donations made and any changes to our donors tax statuses.
- If a donor receives a specific benefit for donating to our charity, it will not be seen as a voluntary donation by the government and won’t qualify for Gift Aid.
How to donate to a charity in someone’s name
In order to donate to charity in someone’s name, you should first ensure that you know which charities they would be interested in donating to.
Once you’ve chosen a charity to donate to, you’ll want to head over to their website where they will most likely have a donation portal. Once the donation is complete and you’ve donated in someone else’s name, you should receive a donation letter.
This donation letter is then the gift you’ll want to keep hold of and give to the person whose name you donated in honour of.
How do charities make money?
There are a number of ways charities make money, and they may often raise money from a variety of sources so they are protected against any drops in vital funds.
Donations are one of the most common ways charities make money, including one-off donations, direct debit, sponsorships for events and money left to charities in wills.
Some charities also sell goods or services to raise money. This could be doing things that are part of their mission, such as selling charity tickets to events. Some charities may even sell their own products and donate all the profits back into the charity.
Are charity donations tax deductible?
Yes, in the UK if a company makes a donation to a registered charity and there is no direct benefit to the donor, then a corporation tax deduction will be available.
Does volunteering affect benefits?
Volunteering shouldn’t affect your right to receive benefits since you do not get paid for it. You can volunteer and still receive benefits so long as you meet all the conditions of your benefits.
